Artist Bio: Betty Vestuto

April 17, 1935 – March 8, 2025

Betty Vestuto is known for her nautical-themed acrylic paintings of ships, lighthouses, and coastal scenes.  Her signature technique—painting directly onto nautical charts—set her work apart and became her artistic trademark.

Betty grew up in California’s San Fernando Valley, moved to Tri-Cities, WA in adulthood and spent her final years in Tumwater, WA.  A lifelong artist, she never stopped creating and was still painting very detailed, realistic paintings well into her late 80s.

An artist “from birth”, Betty came from a long line of Swedish fishermen; her grandfather’s boat was an early subject and source of inspiration.  At age 13, she earned her first income painting signs. Other than weekend art institute classes during high school, Betty was largely self-taught.

Her breakthrough came while living in Tri-Cities. Tired of painting on canvas and wood, she took nautical charts off the wall and decided to paint birds over the glass coverings – her niche was found!  Ever since that day, Betty began painting on nautical charts and it became her passion and an inventive approach that made her work stand out.

The U.S. Coast Guard took notice of her work, and she began painting U.S. Coast Guard ships and stations.  She created over 360 original paintings for the U.S. Coast Guard. Her art became a cherished tribute to those who served, offering veterans a meaningful way to commemorate their years of service.

Betty has explored many other types of paintings —underwater seascapes, abstracts, florals and iconic Washington landmarks such as Mt. Rainier, the Seattle waterfront, and the Space Needle.

In addition to painting, Betty loved gardening.  She had a beautiful yard with a wide variety of plants. On rare sunny days in western Washington, she could always be found tending to her garden.
